NH hotel fire fanned by strong wind destroys block

HAMPTON, N.H. (AP) — A fire that started in an unoccupied oceanfront hotel was fanned by winds of near hurricane force and spread to adjacent buildings, engulfing and destroying an entire block of businesses, firefighters said. No injuries were reported.

The glow from the flames could be seen from miles away, a witness said.

The ferocious blaze started late Thursday or early Friday at the three-story Surf Hotel in Hampton, a densely populated community along the Atlantic coast an hour’s drive north of Boston, fire Capt. David Lang said. The block of five wood-frame buildings, including a games arcade and a restaurant, quickly caught fire, he said.

The weather at the time was rainy and windy because of a storm moving up the Atlantic coast, which helped to fan the flames, he said. The winds were so strong they blew a membrane covering off the hotel’s roof, he said.

The National Weather Service said the region recorded its strongest wind gust of the storm at about the same time the fire was reported — a 68 mph reading, just below hurricane force of 74 mph, at Pease Airport in Portsmouth, about 10 miles north of Hampton.

The bad weather stretched the resources of the fire department, which had sent teams and equipment to several weather-related emergencies, such as fallen trees and transformer fires, before the hotel blaze was reported at 12:05 a.m. Friday and had to scramble to respond, Lang said. Surrounding communities also were taxed and couldn’t send help right away. Firefighters in Massachusetts and Maine were called in.

Paul Sullivan, a retired police officer who lives in the center of town about 3 miles from the hotel, said he could see the fire from his front window.

“I saw a growing glow, getting brighter and brighter by the moment,” Sullivan said by telephone.

It took firefighters several hours before they could put out the fire while battling the winds and the cold, but by then the buildings couldn’t be salvaged, Lang said.

“They’re pretty much gone,” he said.

Hampton is home to Hampton Beach State Park, a popular summer destination. The Surf Hotel is on Ocean Boulevard, which is lined with hotels, condos, restaurants and gift shops. The strip is central to the region’s bustling summer economy and is a major draw for beach visitors but usually is quiet in the winter.

Most of the buildings along Ocean Boulevard are old and very close together, with no firestops in between.

Most of the businesses in the area, including the Surf Hotel, are seasonal, and it’s unlikely anybody would have been in there at this time of year, Sullivan said.

No cause of the fire had been identified.

What’s the real score between Jessica and Billy

Billy Corgan and Jessica Simpson have us wondering what’s going on behind closed doors after photos were released of their recording session for Simpson’s new VH1 show, The Price of Beauty.

“The stuff that I’ve seen doesn’t have any bearing to the reality that I’m in. It’s like being in a cartoon. It has nothing to do with what’s really going on or how I feel,” Corgan told People of the romance rumors.

Um what? Maybe I had one too many glasses of wine, but I read that confusing quote about three times and still think a simple “yes” or “no” would’ve sufficed.

While Corgan can be confusing, artistic and deep; Simpson recently told Allure in her cover story interview, “I definitely will marry an artistic man… I don’t have a physical type. I have an emotional type. When you have yourself together, I don’t care what you look like at all.”

Comments like this make me think she still believes in unicorns and the tooth fairy. I bet she couldn’t stop talking about him while she was out with friends at Jane’s House nightclub in Hollywood, CA Saturday night.

Apologies for being bitter. If there is romance, best of luck to them. However, a source close to Simpson tells People they’re just “good friends”.

Tiger Woods press conference streaming today

You might have heard that Tiger Woods got himself into a little bit of trouble back in 2009. After certain of the golfer’s indiscretions become public knowledge he removed himself from the spotlight and went silent. Now, about three months later, Tiger has scheduled a high profile press conference that will be streamed across the web.

The biggest site to pick up the live stream is YouTube, who announced their involvement in a blog post yesterday. The press conference will be streamed through the site’s Citizen Tube channel at 8 am PT/11 am ET.

ESPN will be broadcasting the conference, as will CBS via their CBSNews Ustream page. The Ustream feed already has over 1400 people RSVP’d, leaving little doubt that this will be a well watched event despite few reporters being invited to watch in person.

The AP has a video just in case you want to get a little background:

With only six members of the press allowed into the event it’s clear that internet streaming has become a replacement for a large, inclusive press conference where anyone in attendance can toss questions at the person on stage. This way Woods gets his finely edited speech out to millions of people while restricting attendance to a handpicked group. And, after all, this isn’t exactly a matter of national security, it’s likely going to be  heartfelt apology then the announcement of Tiger’s triumphant return to save the sport of golf.

You Tube: the Gateway to Fame

Many are called but few are chosen…then again there is You Tube to start with just in case.

With the miles and miles and miles that the Internet has reached out, getting popular and being seen has shown limitless possibilities for people to show off what their opinions, and talents, are. Even our favorite programs, lessons we missed and those who just want to make documentaries and talks shows (that at times are freaky) are broadcasted through this medium. No wonder Information Overload is the newest illness in town. However, in as much as we become more dependent on the magnitude the internet can provide us with (with regards to communication and information), this has also become the gateway to some of today’s budding stars as there background check shows.

Charice Pempengco of the Philippines gained much attention and fame as a Filipino fan posted her video on You Tube. It was until Ellen De Genres and Oprah Winfrey got her as a guest and asked her to sing on their shows that the world got fixated on this Filipina wonder that can belt and express her singing prowess more than those compared to her age according to records search. She is just one of many who got her name known to every household.

There are more like Charice. Public records search gives another sensation who posted herself singing songs from popular RnB and pop singers got her way to stardom and presently, and recently, released her album entitled “Breathing Water”.  Marie Digby’s rendition of Umbrella was much better than the original and got many people fixated on that beautiful acoustic singer on You Tube. At present she has music videos of her where she guests in shows plus her worldwide premier of her song “Say it Again” which played endlessly on radios.

Charice and Marie are just two reasons why most of us even find a person are getting pretty hooked up with watching You Tube videos. Meanwhile it was by luck that yours truly stumble upon his video followed by their duet till I got to see her original composition sang on video.

His name is Ben Sharkey. While watching Michael Buble’s “haven’t met you yet” video, the side scroll bar showing other related videos revealed another rendition of Buble’s song by Sharkey. Getting fixated on a video from this guy was like saying “I think I love you”. He sang Buble’s song with such fun that one can’t help singing along.  There was one song that he sang together with another YouTube star.

Her name is Tuana Mey. It was one of the Ben Sharkey’s posted video that I got to know her. She is beautiful and she reminded me of Norah Jones-slash-Vanessa Carlton. She also has her own set of videos which showcases her talent not only in singing but also in songwriting. Most of her posts were actually her compositions—one, which caught my attention that I have to play it over and over again—is “don’t say goodbye”.

Charice, Marie, Ben and Tuana are just a few of You Tube’s talents. At present there are still many whom wish to reach fame and have posted their talents on the said site. They even have their Twitter accounts just in case. There are more that I’m sure people would want to look forward for.

Alexander McQueen commited suicide

A British medical examiner today confirmed to Westminister Coroner Court that the iconic designer died of asphyxiation and hanging, confirming the widespread reports that his death last Thursday was due to suicide.

At the five-minute hearing, during which the media present were asked once again to respect the McQueen family’s privacy in the wake of their “grievous double loss in a very short space of time,” more details of how the couturier was found were also revealed.

According to the coroner official, McQueen’s body was found hanging in his wardrobe in his London apartment the day before the funeral of his mother, Joyce, was to take place. The 40-year-old designer, whose real name was Lee McQueen, had been tweeting about how difficult it was coping with that loss in the days leading up to his death.

“At about 10:30 a.m. last Thursday…a man was found hanging in his wardrobe at Flat 1, Green Street, London, W1,” the medical examiner’s official Lynda Martindill said in a statement to the court. “On Monday, Feb. 15, he was identified as Lee Alexander McQueen…he was a single man, a fashion designer.”

His older sister, Janet McQueen, was called in to identify the body, and officials said they found a suicide note left by the designer nearby, but did not divulge its contents. It has since been turned over to the coroner as part of the investigation. The detective in charge of the inquest, which is launched in the wake of any violent or otherwise unexplained death in Britain, also informed the court that there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death.

A subsequent hearing on the inquest has been set for April 28. In the meantime, London Fashion Week officials are working overtime to plan a tribute to the fashion giant when the suddenly more somber sartorial festivities kick off on Friday.

Kristen Stewart in ‘The Yellow Handkerchief’

She’s about to open the second-biggest film of her career, so what better timing than now to point you to a new peek at Kristen Stewart’s next non-Twilight film? Check out the new trailer for The Yellow Handkerchief, a Sundance entry that follows three strangers in post-Katrina Louisiana – Martine (Stewart), Gordy (Eddie Redmayne), and Brett (William Hurt) — as they search together for life, love, and the perfect Southern accent.

Ok, so it seems the Southern slangin’ is done primarily by Stewart, while Brit Redmayne goes American and Hurt rocks the ex-con handlebar mustache. As they embark on a road trip together, the two teens listen to Brett’s tale of the woman who got away (Maria Bello) while they navigate the murky waters of young love.

Watch the trailer after the jump.
After months without a distributor, The Yellow Handkerchief was picked up by Samuel Goldwyn films during the summer and will hit theaters February 10, 2010 – just in time for Valentine’s Day! The date puts The Yellow Handkerchief smack dab in the middle of a busy few weekends for lovers, where it will have to compete with the hunky Channing Tatum’s Dear John, Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor’s I Love You, Phillip Morris, the ensemble rom-com Valentine’s Day, and my most anticipated V-Day release, The Wolfman.

Crowded release date aside, at least The Yellow Handkerchief is getting a theatrical release, unlike many other indie films featuring Twilight stars that can hope for a DVD bow at best. It’s also timed perfectly to fill a gap between this month’s The Twilight Saga: New Moon and the next vampy installment, Eclipse, so I’m guessing The Yellow Hankie will do just fine.

Watch the trailer and tell us what you think: does Stewart’s accent convince? Will it be another lip-biting, hair-tugging performance for the Twilight star? Will you buy a ticket on opening day?

Alec Baldwin “Assaulted” Photographer After Hospital Scare

On Thursday evening, the same day he checked out of an NYC hospital (he had threatened to “take some pills”) Alec Baldwin flew into a rage and grabbed a photographer, multiple outlets are reporting.

“This guy! This guy!” Baldwin yelled at New York Post photographer Tim Wiencis outside his Manhattan apartment; as cops and other photographers stood by, the Emmy-winning actor grabbed Wiencis by the collar. Inside Edition revealed photos from the incident.

Look back on these shocking celeb breakdowns

The Daily News reports that Baldwin had returned home around 5:30 p.m. from a day of shooting 30 Rock to discover photographers camped outside his building. Wiencis reportedly tapped him on the shoulder. “Don’t touch me!” Baldwin snapped. “I’m calling the cops!”

Police quickly pulled Baldwin off of Wiencis and took him back inside. Witnesses overhead Baldwin “pacing around the lobby” muttering “they are the lowest scum of the Earth. They are the lowest scum of the Earth,” according to the Daily News.

Remember these nasty Hollywood family feuds?

Of the unexpected outburst, Wiencis told police, “He just assaulted me.” He did not file charges, however.

Baldwin, 51, was taken to Lenox Hill Hospital early Thursday morning after his daughter Ireland called 911, claiming that her dad was “unresponsive” in their Upper West Side Apartment.

A spokesperson told Us that the 30 Rock star was “completely fine” after being examined by doctors. According to the Associated Press, Baldwin and Ireland, 14, had an argument in which he threatened to take pills.

“This was a misunderstanding on one person’s part,” Baldwin’s rep told Us Thursday morning. “Alec was quickly released from the hospital he’s completely fine and will be at work today.”

Baldwin has been in a protracted custody dispute over Ireland with his ex-wife Kim Basinger
